Poppy’s electric performance at Electric Bristol

Poppy’s sold-out Constantly Nowhere tour at Electric Bristol was a true-to-form performance from the former pop artist that defies genre boxes with an emphasis on heavy metal but balanced with versatile melodic pop vocals amid the well-executed screams. Many people’s hackles seem to get raised at the mention of Poppy saying she’s not metal. Still, they’re missing the point. She’s not limiting herself to one genre, and her music is pretty metal, but a blend of nu metal, industrial, and metalcore. Her costume designer provides her with brilliantly iconic outfits drawing influence from 90s pop fashion and grunge with doll and emo aesthetics. Her merch table had some of the best t-shirt designs I’d seen in a while (I picked up 2 and would have nabbed a poster, but I think it had been kept back for someone).

Poppy played her Empty Hands album as well as some other tracks from recent albums that I was glad to hear, like Violence Against Nature.

(Admittedly biased) Rating: 10/10
